Phantasmagoria Mailing List

Phantasmagoria mailing list cover

A brown exercise book about 200mm by 160mm contains what is likely the mailing list and subscription records for the UK fanzine Phantasmagoria published by Derek Pickles of Bradford. It came into the possession of Peter Weston by an uncertain route. He passed it to Rob Hansen who in turn passed it to Mark Plummer. While the book is not explicitly labelled, there are four reasons to assume it's the mailing list for Phantasmagoria:

  • The exercise book was produced for The Grange High School for Boys, Bradford, so there's a good chance it belonged to somebody from Bradford.
  • The references to volumes and issue numbers in the subscription records are consistent with Phantasmagoria.
  • A letter from Pickles in The Mentor #81 (January 1994) mentions 'my 1950s mailing list' and has recognisable points of convergence, including lesser known figures.
  • Pickles himself isn't listed and as it clearly is a mailing and subscription record for an early 1950s UK fanzine, he surely would have been if it was for another title.
An 'N' and 'M' page. 'Race' Mathews at the bottom.

The book records names, addresses, and which issues were sent and on what basis, including whether it was by paid subscription or a prozine or fanzine trade. In a few cases no specific reason is given. For fanzine trades, the entry is sometimes under the person and sometimes under the fanzine; here they're been arranged by the former with recipient and fanzine both given. Some entries are marked (OF), presumably indicating that their details came through Operation Fantast. Many of the Americans were also members of the N3F, as was Pickles. The records are hand-written in several different hands. Sadly, they are not always clear although most of those that aren't can still be deciphered if you can guess what they're supposed to say. Others defy interpretation.

There are 162 names on the list; all but 23 have entries in Fancyclopedia 3 (as of January 2025). The country breakdown is:

Not all these people were receiving copies at the same time. Some received only the first issue with others joining the mailing list well into volume two.

The publication of Phantasmagoria coincides with the existence of the Bradford Science Fiction Association but its members don't appear on the list, while the two listed people with Bradford addresses weren't members of the Association. It is possible that members collected copies in person at club meetings.

Unlinked names in italics are those for whom there is no trace elsewhere or which can't be read clearly.

  1. Farnham not explicitly mentioned, only The Centaurian.
  2. This name isn't clear. It was originally LAC (Leading Aircraftsman) Gale at an RAF base in Scotland, then the LAC bit was crossed out and replaced with something else unreadable with a new address in Elland, Yorkshire.
  3. Name indistinct.
  4. Harris is explicitly noted as 'Exchange for -'.
  5. Name indistinct. Could be Mr B. Horner.
  6. The address is the group's clubroom.
  7. Martinez isn't explicitly mentioned; the record only says Shadowland.
  8. See image above. The entry appears to say Jack, Jock or John. It doesn't say Race. But the address is that of Race Mathews and he didn't have brothers with any of those names.
  9. Not explicit what the trade was but presumably Starlanes.
  10. Name indistinct but identified in N3F directory (TNFF Vol 11 #2, April–May 1952) thanks to his first address at Andrews Air Force Base; later in New Orleans.
  11. Or perhaps A. J. Sheckley.
  12. British Army of the Rhine.
  13. The one thing we do know is that he lived less than five minutes' walk from the 1940s address of J. Michael Rosenblum.
  14. An earlier address for Stroud was in Singapore.
