Denness Morton
Denness Morton was a fan and fan artist from Leith in Edinburgh, Scotland active in the 1950s. His artwork appeared in Eye, Klein Bottle, Nonsense, Peon, Void, Vulcan and Zenith. There is a Morton art portfolio in Glubbdubdrib #1 (1958). He was a member of the Fantasy Art Society.
In Zenith #6 (June 1953) one of the editors wrote:
Denness has ambitions to become a commercial artist, regards Quinn as the best illustrator in British science fiction, does not believe Walter Willis is a leprechaun and does not read Quandry
In Nebula #5 (September 1953), Willis wrote of that issue of Zenith:
But probably the best things in this excellent magazine are the cartoons by Denness Morton who is, I am told, 78 years of age, female, and a Scottish Nationalist. In spite of all this she seems to have a keen sense of humour.
Willis had seemingly been misinformed as Operation Fantast #12 (Spring 1952) said Morton was 15-years-old. Hyphen #4 (October 1953) carries: ' FLASH: Denness Morton is not a 70 year old spinster.'
It's unknown to what extent Morton achieved his ambition to be a commercial artist but if he did it seemingly wasn't in the SFF field. Denness Morton's works appeared in the 'Five Scottish Seniors' exhibition at the Stenton Gallery in 2001[3].
