(???? – )

Dave Busby was a fan from Wokingham in Berkshire active in the 1960s. He was a member of the BSFA and contributed several articles, covers and interiors to Vector between 1964 and 1967. He was a member of Repetercon, Brumcon II and Yarcon (respectively the 1964, 1965 and 1966 Eastercons) and of Loncon II.

In a letter to Relapse #16 (February 2010), Chris Priest recalled Busby as 'a pal of Terry Pratchett's'. He added:

I met him only once, and that was an evening at Judy Merril's when he and Terry turned up and did a sort of Ant-and-Dec[1] double act, feeding lines to each other.

At Loncon II Busby was on a fan panel, 'All Things to All Fen'. Ron Bennett, writing in Skyrack #83 (September 1965) described it:

Mainly, the panel discussed the differing quality of fanzines and how much enjoyment each panel member has gleaned (or in the case of Dave Busby not gleaned!) from reading fanzines, from contributing to fanzines and from the social world of fandom as a whole.

At Yarcon he appeared on a new authors panel with John Campbell, James Colvin, Hank Dempsey, Langdon Jones, Paddy O’Halloran[2], Terry Pratchett and Keith Woodcott, several of whom were pseudonymous and less than entirely fitting the 'new' tag.

Busby had published a story in New Worlds #136 (November 1963) and ISFDB lists a second published in F&SF (August 1987). The latter includes a brief author bio which makes no mention of the previous sale. However, if indeed it is the same person it adds the biographical details that Busby spent the early part of his life in Pakistan and later worked in various jobs including electronic, agriculture, printing, book-selling, tree-felling and construction. He was then living in the England-Wales border region. In any event he has two entries in ISFDB, one for 'Dave Busby' covering the Vector appearances and another for 'David Busby' covering his two published stories.

  1. See Wikipedia if a clarification is needed.
  2. This one isn't entirely clear as ISFDB doesn't list the name. However, in Hell #6 (October 1972) Archie Mercer said 'If James White was to use a pseudonym, it is generally understood that it would be Paddy O'Halloran'.
