Chicon 7, the 70th Worldcon and seventh in Chicago, was held August 30 to September 3, 2012, at the Hyatt Regency Chicago. GoHs: Mike Resnick (author), Story Musgrave (astronaut), Jane Frank (agent), Rowena Morrill (artist), and Peggy Rae Sapienza (fgoh). Rowena was unable to attend due to health issues. John Scalzi was Toastmaster. Sy Liebergot was a Special Guest.
The annual 1632 Minicon was held during the convention.
On occasion (jokingly) referred to as Chicon 2001 (because the previous Chicon in 2000 was called Chicon 2000) and TASFIC 3 (because Chicon 2 was also known as TASFIC).
The convention's parent corporation was Chicago Worldcon Bid, which sponsored the Chicago in 2012 bid and, previously, the unsuccessful Chicago in 2008 bid. Chicon 7 won in the 2012 Worldcon Site Selection at Aussiecon 4 in 2010. It hosted the 2014 Worldcon Site Selection.
Among other things, the WSFS Business meeting considered a motion declaring that Yngvi is not a louse, but it failed.
Chairman: Dave McCarty. Chicon 7 had three vice-chairs, Helen Montgomery, Bobbi Armbruster, and Steven H Silver. They were collectively referred to, along with Dave McCarty, as the Flying Monkees.
At the 2012 Hugos ceremony, Chicon 7 presented a Special Committee Award to Chicago author, collector, publisher, bookseller, and editor Robert Weinberg for his service to science fiction, fantasy, and horror.
Flying Monkees[edit]
The top command group for Chicon 7, comprised of chairman Dave McCarty and vice chairs Bobbi Armbruster, Helen Montgomery, and Steven H Silver, were called by this nickname.
When Armbruster was invited to join as a vice-chair, she commented that she had already been a vice chair, but always wanted to be a flying monkey. Chicon's IT department, setting up e-mail for the team, misspelled the title as flyingmonkees@... Silver immediately proclaimed himself "Peter Tork" after the actor from the 1960s comedy television show The Monkees. Armbruster claimed the identity of "Micky Dolenz," McCarty took "Davy Jones" (who died shortly before the con), and Montgomery took "Mike Nesmith."
In addition to each of their regular badges, each had a secondary badge with their "Monkee" name on it.
Following in the spirit, the Finance office at Chicon 7 proclaimed themselves "The Miserly Monkees" and the Facilities department kept a life-size cut out of a Flying Monkey from The Wizard of Oz outside their office space.
Michael Longcor's song "If I Could Be a Flying Monkey" was played at closing ceremonies.
