Rottnest Island (named by the Dutch mistaking the endemic quokka marsupials for rats) off Perth, Western Australia, was the venue for a series of relaxacons called Ratcon (fl. early 1980s).
"Ratcon for Natcon" was a bid chaired by Ian Nicholls, defeated at Swancon 18 in 1993 by the Tasmanian bid which became Thylacon 1 (the third bid was Swancon '95 in Perth).[1] It is not certain how serious the bid was, and whether there were other instances.
Rottnest Island has also received write-in votes in Worldcon site selection intermittently since the 1983 one (i. e. in 1981), peaking at 3 for 1999 (when Aussiecon III won; the 1996 Business Meeting "noted that Rottnest Island did submit a filing, and so would have been eligible," although no details of the filing seem available), and appearing as late as the 2019 Worldcon Site Selection.
