Once Upon a Time, it was not risible to think of creating a fan directory of all active fans, and many people did. (See the entry for lists and details.) This was soon expanded to a "Who's Who", an encyclopedic collection of (auto)biographies.

Ted Dikty created Who's Who in Fandom 1940; Rogue's Gallery (1943) served a similar purpose. (British Fantasy Society announced the same intention but this fizzled; Directory of Anglofandom.)

In 1961, Lloyd D. Broyles published Who's Who in Science Fiction Fandom (per cover; in the introduction, a shortened form "… in SF Fandom" is used), a 40 page booklet. (Back cover is empty, Addenda ends on "Page 39".) 400 copies were duplicated.

There are more than 300 entries, covering fans famous and unknown (however also missing many major fans of the day, whether by Broyle's omission or their own). The information was collected using a questionnaire circulated through fandom. Besides things like name and address and fanzines published, club memberships, and conventions attended (remember, this was 1961!) it also asked when the fan started reading SF, and entered fandom. Interestingly for modern readers, it also asked what speed tape recorders the fan could use (this early recording craze is not yet fully covered by the modern Fancyclopedia 3; see Fancy 2's sonodiscs and tapera).

Broyles announced a second, larger, and more complete, edition the following year, but was himself gafiating and it never happened.
