Strange Tales of Mystery and Terror

Strange Tales, begun in 1931 by Clayton Magazines of New York, was aimed at the same readers who read Weird Tales. The editor, Harry Bates, paid more for stories than Weird Tales and published many of the same authors, including Hugh B. Cave, Paul Ernst, Ray Cummings, August Derleth, Henry Whitehead, Clark Ashton Smith, and Jack Williamson.
Strange Tales folded in 1933, after only seven issues, a victim of the Depresson.
Street and Smith acquired the rights to the magazine when it acquired Astounding in 1933, but never revived Strange Tales. It has been speculated that, had it done so, Unknown might never have appeared.
