Patrice Anne "Pat" Murphy was born in Spokane, Washington, and was educated at The University of California, Santa Cruz (BA in biology and general science, 1976). She married Dave Wright in 1999. She began publishing SF in the 1970s.

First SF publication: "Nightbird at the Window" in Chrysalis 5 (1979); First novel: The Shadow Hunter (Popular Library, 1982); First collection: Points of Departure (Bantam, 1990) [Introduction by Kate Wilhelm].

She is known as a skilled and sensitive writer who spends a lot of time doing research for her books. In addition to her award-winning works, she has published The City, Not Long After (1989), a story of a future San Francisco depopulated by a new plague (and based on her story, "Art in the War Zone," that appeared in the original anthology series, Universe). Two interviews with Murphy appeared in the Summer 1990 issue (Vol. 3, No. 2) of the fanzine Nova Express.

Murphy's other fiction includes There and Back Again: By Max Merriwell in 1999, and The Wild Angel in 2000. Both her Adventures in Time and Space with Max Merriwell and the booklet A Flock of Lawn Flamingos [a story she originally published in Lethal Kisses, a UK anthology] were published in 2001. In 2008, with Karen Joy Fowler and Debbie Notkin, she edited The James Tiptree Award Anthology 4.
