Mary Helen Washington

(October 20, 1932 – November 30, 1998)

Mary Helen Washington was an early young Florida fan who was connected with Claude Degler’s Cosmic Circle in the 1940s.

She was Raym Washington's younger sister. With Degler, they held the Live Oak Conference in their hometown of Live Oak in early 1943.

She wrote for her brother’s fanzines. In Le Zombie 48 (July 1942), Bob Tucker described 16-year-old Frank Robinson’s reaction to the 10-year-old’s work:

He found, and read aloud, Mary Helen Washington's saga of unforgettable courage "The Monster of the Cave" in Scientifun #2. He spent the entire two days stomping about the house shrieking out sentences, to wit: "Fan started telling his tongue off," and "Fan drawed his throat in."

Mary married Windell Bates Scaff in 1962 and she died in 1998.
