Karen Kurz

(1935 – )

Karen Kurz (later, Cooper-Johnston) was an American fan active in the early 1950s. She contributed to fanzines and belonged to the ISFCC and TLMA.

She was the daughter of Jean Carrol, but appears to have been reared by her grandmother in a rural area outside Pittsburgh, while her divorced mother worked in New York. They both joined the N3F the same year, 1950.

Karen’s introduction in The Committeeman 2 (October 16, 1950, p. 3):

Karen Kurz--204 Fourth St., Belle Vernon, Penna. Student, 15, read stf 1 yr. Amateur writer and artist. Corresponds. Yes to N3F work. Any. Sponsor, Charles Baird.

Both mother and daughter attended Midwestcon 3 in 1952. By 1953, Karen was living in Berkeley, CA, perhaps for college. After that, fandom sees her no more. A 1999 obituary for her stepfather, Ted Engel, names her among his survivors as Karen Cooper-Johnston.
