(April 19, 1849 – April 9, 1936)

John Uri Lloyd, a U.S. chemist and author, is chiefly known for his 1895 Lost World novel, Etidorhpa, or The End of Earth: The Strange History of a Mysterious Being and the Account of a Remarkable Journey: As Communicated in Manuscript to Llewellyn Drury Who Promised to Print the Same, But Finally Evaded the Responsibility Which Was Assumed by John Uri Lloyd. It is notable because the earliest known print mention of “science fiction” as a genre appeared in reference to it in 1897.
