(???? –)

James Clay was a UK fan from London active in the 1940s. He attended the meeting that led to the formation of the Science Fantasy Society and became one of its committee members.

Clay was presumably a member of the Cosmos Club as he continued to maintain its library after the club was wound up in 1946. He was at the 1948 Whitcon. On 26 September 1948 he attended a meeting convened by Ken Slater and hosted by Owen Plumridge to thrash out the idea of new national fan organisation. A subsequent open meeting of London fans on 9 October resulted in the creation of the Science Fantasy Society. Clay is listed as a committee member albeit with no specific role. He doesn't appear to be in evidence after 1949 and an article in Science Fantasy News #3 implies his job had kept him from playing a full role in the Society.
