Jean Murrey

Jean Murrey (sometimes spelled Jean Murray) was a UK fan, fanartist and poet from Middlesex and later Bournemouth active in the 1940s. She was a member of the Cosmos Club (CSC) and also of the British Fantasy Society (BFS). When she joined the latter in September 1943 D. R. Smith described her as 'Beefasmette Number Two', their second female member after Anne Gardiner[1].
She may have been a member of the Paint Research Station Science Fiction Library as her earliest contributions to The Beyond was in Autumn 1942, predating the formation of the CSC. She acted as treasurer for the latter until she entered the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF), and was the only one who showed up when Gus Willmorth visited Teddington for a meeting scheduled at Shirley's Cafe 'where a bit of beer was to be consumed'[2]. She contributed artwork and poems to several issues The Beyond. Futurian War Digest #32 (December 1943) reported that she had moved to Bournemouth, 'leaving the Cosmos Club (almost) desolate'.
She is listed in the Directory of Anglo-Fandom of 1945 (as 'C. Jean Murrey') still in Bournemouth although tagged as 'Not in touch at the present moment'. She does but appear in later editions.
