Ethil The Frog

Ethil The Frog was a postal Diplomacy fanzine published by John Piggott. A leading zine of the day, it reprinted several articles from SF fanzines, including one by Dave Langford, who was surprised to learn that his jokes about fannish personalities had been rewritten to relate to Diplomacy fans who were strangers to him.

Its subject matter puts it largely outside the scope of Fancyclopedia so this is a summary of its history rather than a full table of issues.

Its first series saw 46 issues between January 1972 and March 1974. Its end coincides with Piggott's resumed interest in more fannish fanzines as referenced in Ritblat / Grim News #2 (April 1974).

A second series, restarting the numbering sequence, saw 23 issues between February 1977 and March 1979, ending shortly before Piggott's marriage. A third series began in November 1986. This didn't restart the numbering and further incorporated the 26-issue run of a separate title, Fortis Est Rana, into its back story so the first issue of the third series was #96. It's possible that Piggott subsequently decided to incorporate The Turning Worm into the run as well. The archive of back issues lists no #97–99 whereas Ethil The Frog #100 says it is 'incorporating Fortis Est Rana and The Turning Worm'. #102 was published in February 1989. It's unclear if that was the last.
