Doug Wright
(???? -- )
Douglas Wright is a somewhat shadowy figure on the edges of LA fandom who was attempting to run for-profit conventions. He came into conflict with LA fans in the late 70s when he tried to create a series of conventions which were alleged to be for-profit and yet used volunteers and certainly competed directly with established fannish conventions.
There were a series of conflicts where he apparently prohibited other conventions (fannish and media both) from even handing out flyers at his convention. What seems to have united LA fandom against him (no mean feat, that!) is when he booked his conventions in "their" facilities, forcing the fannish conventions to move site or weekend. (See, for example, LA in '80.) He also is reported to have prohibited people working on his conventions from working on anyone else's.
In 1979 the California Division of Labor reportedly forced him to fire all of the underage gophers he was using at one of his conventions and fined him $1100. He was suspected of having returned the favor by filing a complaint against Westercon 32.
