Also called the Border Cities Stf Conference, a convention held July 3–5, 1954, in Detroit, MI, chaired by Roger Sims and George Young.
They budgeted for some 300 people, but only 45 attended. Similarly, they committed to 100 banquet tickets and sold 35.
The financial shortfall had to be covered by Howard DeVore, who donated a set of Astoundings to auction, causing DeVore to announce that there would be a Worldcon in Detroit over his dead body. Accordingly, at opening ceremonies for Detention in 1959, fans heard the sound of a gunshot, Howard fell to the floor, and the concom dragged him across the stage to start the Worldcon.
