The 1978 Best Short Story Hugo was presented September 3 at Iguanacon.
Iguanacon only listed the order of finish for the first three places.

- "Air Raid" by Herb Boehm [Asimov's Spr 1977]
- "Dog Day Evening" by Spider Robinson [Analog Oct 1977]
- "Lauralyn" by Randall Garrett [Analog Apr 1977]
- "Time-Sharing Angel" by James Tiptree, Jr. [F&SF Oct 1977]
Unlike the winners in Best Fanzine, Best Fan Artist, and Best Fan Writer, Ellison announced that he would accept a nomination next year if he got one.
