Hugh Chalkley
(???? – )
Hugh Chalkley was a fan who attended the BSFA Convention, 1960. The somewhat minimalist evidence for his existence comes from two mentions in Cactus 5 (May 1960). Archie Mercer's convention report says of Chalkley only:
(no, I'd never heard of him either – but he exists, the registration cash book doesn't lie)
Elsewhere in Cactus he features in the "Collected Quotes" from the convention assembled by Alan Rispin where he is credited with saying:
"I'm not drunk enough to smoke."
However Rispin gives his name as Hugh Calkley so perhaps the registration cash book is, if not all-out lying, an unreliable narrator. Or maybe that's Alan Rispin.
An H. R. Chalkley appears on the membership list for Seacon '79, the 1979 Worldcon. It's impossible to tell whether it's the same person but it's tempting to believe he'd spent the intervening (nearly) twenty years thinking of a follow-up to that 1960 cracker.
