"Orlando in 1992" was a successful bid that became MagiCon, the 50th Worldcon. It was initiated by Becky Thomson, and was co-chaired by her, Joe Siclari and Tom Veal.
A Washington, D.C. committee also bid for 1992, and the race was regarded as neck-and-neck until the D.C. bid lost its facilities to a well-heeled mundane convention and dropped out of the running. The Orlando bid was the first to reveal its intended name, "MagiCon", in advance of being selected. The most memorable bid gimmick was a series of eight bookmarks, each featuring a (very) short story and artwork by a professional author and artist.
