(September 30, 1932 – March 31, 2020)

Brian Hughes Varley was a longtime British fan who made contact with fandom in 1952, attended the Medcon in 1953 and worked on the 1954 Supermancon and the 1965 London Worldcon, Loncon II.

He wrote a regular column for Ethel Lindsay's Scottishe as Machiavarley, a nickname bestowed on him by Walt Willis. Varley maintained some fan contacts in the twenty-first century, for example publishing a letter in Peter Weston's Prolapse #11 (May 2008).

He married Frances Evans about 1961. In mundane life, he was director of the British Overseas Trade Board and an avid bridge player. He died from Covid-19. At the time of his death, he lived in Pedmore, Stourbridge.
