James Shields is a member of modern Irish Fandom. He was chairperson of Octocon in 2000, and co-chairperson of Shamrokon in 2014, he has been involved in a number of Committees over the years in various roles.

He was the GUFF delegate in 2010, where he got the idea of the event that became Shamrokon. He blogged about his Guff Trip and published the trip report, A Rough Guide to GUFF.

He has been on a number of Eastercon Committees, including Innominate (2017), Ytterbium (2019), Concentric (2020, cancelled), ConFusion (2021), Reclamation (2022).

He is a software developer by trade, and has worked on a number of fannish software projects, including the ConReg registration system, ConClár online programme guide, and Zambia and PlanZ programme planning tools.

At Reclamation, the 2022 Eastercon, he was presented that year's Doc Weir Award.
