The International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts (IAFA) a nonprofit organization of academics, writers, and publishers of science fiction, fantasy, and horror in literature, film, and other arts. Its purpose is to promote and recognize achievement in the study of the fantastic.

It was founded in 1982 and organizes the International Conference on the Fantastic in the Arts (ICFA), and publishes the Journal of the Fantastic in the Arts (JFA).

Awards[edit]

The IAFA Distinguished Scholarship Award[edit]

The IAFA Distinguished Scholarship Award, a career award, presented annually since 1986, recognizing distinguished contributions to the scholarship and criticism of the fantastic.

The IAFA William L. Crawford Fantasy Award[edit]

Named for William L. Crawford, this award recognizes an outstanding new writer whose first fantasy book was published during the previous calendar year.

The Walter James Miller Memorial Award for Student Scholarship in the International Fantastic[edit]

Given annually to the author of the best ICFA student paper devoted to works of the fantastic originally created in a language other than English.

Robert A. Collins Service Award[edit]

Named after the ICFA founder (who was also its first recipient in 1985), this special award is presented to an officer, board member, or division head for outstanding service to the organization.

Stephen R. Donaldson Award[edit]

Named for Stephen R. Donaldson, this special award, presented only seven times since its inception in 1996, recognizes exceptional support and service to the organization from individuals who have not served as officers, board members, or division heads.

David G. Hartwell Emerging Scholar Award[edit]

The annual award, renamed for David G. Hartwell in 2016, with a $250 stipend, go to the graduate student submitting the most outstanding paper at the ICFA.

Jamie Bishop Memorial Award for an Essay Not in English[edit]

Named for author Michael Bishop’s son, an instructor of the German language at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, who was killed in the Virginia Tech massacre of April 16, 2007, this award is a $250 stipend and one year’s free membership in the IAFA.

Dell Magazines Award[edit]

Formerly the Isaac Asimov Award, the $500 award goes to the best unpublished and unsold science fiction or fantasy short story submitted by a full-time undergraduate college student.

Imagining Indigenous Futurisms Award[edit]

This award recognizes emerging authors who use science fiction to address issues of Indigenous sovereignty and self-determination.

BIPOC Caucus Awards[edit]

Two awards, one for Exemplary Allies and one for Members who have served the community as Uplifters.
