HELIOsphere 2017
HELIOsphere 2017, the first HELIOsphere, was a convention held at the DoubleTree Hotel in Tarrytown, NY on March 10-12, 2017. The GoHs were Jacqueline Carey, David Gerrold, and Danielle Ackley-McPhail. Additional Special Guests were Charles Gannon and Heidi Hooper, who was billed as Featured Artist.
It was run by a committee chaired by Mark W. Richards and including Catelynn Cunningham, Liz Crefin, Tara Walsh, Gabby Morel, Joni Dashoff, Debi Chowdhury, and Ken Winter.
Other notable guests included Alex Shvartsman, Keith R.A. deCandido, Paul Levinson, Laura Antoniou, and Jim Freund.
One of the program's features was that, in lieu of the traditional GoH speeches, the Guests of Honor were interviewed. David Gerrold was interviewed by Jim Freund, host of the WBAI/Pacifica radio program The Hour of the Wolf, while Jacqueline Carey was interviewed by Laura Antoniou and Keith DeCandido conducted an interview and Q&A session with Danielle Ackley-McPhail.
Another highlight was a Saturday night blues dance and masque (instead of a masquerade), using as inspiration the "Longest Night" masqued ball in one of GoH Carey's novels.
