RaceFail was the name given to a vast online flamefest that began in 2009 over racism, cultural appropriation, white privilege and related topics in science fiction writing publishing and the sf community. It involved a number of mainly white pros who were aghast to discover they weren’t as woke as they thought they were in the eyes of people to whom those issues are life-or-death matters.
It occurred mainly on Live Journal, with much of the nonpro contingent using screennames, another issue in the arguments.
It affected conrunners, who continue to consider its impact in goh and program participant choices.
