A twonky is a gadget or gizmo, a flange, a computer or nonanthropoid robot, especially one that is overly complicated and/or isn’t working the way it’s supposed to.
The term comes from “The Twonky,” a short story by Lewis Padgett (C. L. Moore and Henry Kuttner) that first appeared in the September 1942 issue of Astounding, in which the namesake device is a rather disturbing radio-phonograph. It was made into a 1953 film directed by Arch Oboler. In 2018, it won the 1943 Best Short Story Retro Hugo.
