Harlan Ellison & Bill Rotsler Egg Adventure
Revision as of 08:15, 29 October 2020 by Leah Zeldes Smith (talk | contribs)
One morning at Westercon XIX in 1966, Harlan Ellison, Bill Rotsler and John, and Bjo Trimble had breakfast in the hotel restaurant, and Ellison ordered a fried egg. When it arrived, it was overdone to the point of inedibility and Ellison complained to the waiter. While the waiter was listening to Ellison, Rotsler took out a pen and drew a smiley face on the hardened egg yolk.
Rotsler took the egg to the art show and registered it as a piece of art. The hotel demanded it be removed, but backed off when they were shown the paperwork submitting it as artwork. The egg eventually sold at auction, although the hotel insisted that the plate it was on remain at the hotel.
