Novella

A somewhat artificial category of fiction: A long short story or a short novel.
In the Hugo rules, a novella is defined as a story larger than the upper end of the Best Novelette Hugo category (17,500 words) and shorter than the novel category which starts at 40,000 words. The Best Novella Hugo was instituted in 1968.
The term, borrowed from Italian, seems to have come into English in the late 19th century, at least in literary criticism.
