A fan and filker active since the early 1980s, Kathy Mar is a composer, guitarist and singer. She has been a leading advocate for including filk at science fiction conventions. Along with Lindy Sears, she invented The Dandelion Conspiracy.
A native of Denver, she lives with her primary life partner, Dean Dierschow, in a commune in San Leandro, California. She has had four children: Michael (1970–1982), Melanie (b. 1972) and twins Nicolas and Cassandra (b. 1985).
