John Closson created calligraphic designs for Tolkien fandom buttons in the 1960s. According to Ed Meskys, in The View from Entropy Hall #12, Closson was paid "$25 for each design and no royalties." In the 1970s, Cuyler Warnell "Ned" Brooks attempted unsuccessfully to contact Closson in order to secure permission to reprint the designs. It appears that Closson's work appeared in a few Tolkien-related 'zines.
