A somewhat artificial category of fiction: A story which is somewhat longer than a short story.
In the Hugo rules, a novelette is defined as a story larger than a short story (up to 7,500 words) and shorter than the Best Novella Hugo category which starts at 17,500 words. The Best Novelette Hugo for this length was first given in 1955.
