Tom Whitmore was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in the San Francisco Bay area. He attended U.C. Berkeley, graduated with a degree in Zoology, and then went into the book business. For more than 30 years, he was a partner in Other Change of Hobbit book store in Berkeley, a gathering place for people who read and write SF and fantasy.

He is a fanhistorian and has published works such as 1991's A Fan's Christmas in Ireland.

He co-chaired ConJosé, the 2002 Worldcon and was Fan GoH at Denvention 3, the 2008 Worldcon. He also chaired Potlatch 2 and Smofcon 2 and has worked on a great many Worldcons and regionals. He ran for DUFF in 1987. He was a member of the Little Men.

In 1996, Tom relocated to Seattle, where he studied massage and helped start one of the nation's first co-housing communities in West Seattle. He currently lives in Seattle with his partner, Karen G. Anderson (not to be confused with Karen Anderson).
