Secondary Universe III was held during October 1970 at the Queensboro Community College in Bayside, LI, New York. It was organized by Virginia Carew.
At this conference, the SFRA was created and Tom Clareson was elected the first president and Extrapolation was adopted as the SFRA's official journal.
Even more famously, it was here that Dena Brown, aghast at what academics were doing to SF, coined the immortal phrase: "Let's Take Science Fiction Out of the Universities and Put It Back into the Gutter Where It Belongs."
