“The Desert of Indifference” refers to one difficulty new, unknown fans encounter upon finding fandom.
In The Enchanted Duplicator, new faneds must face it upon launching their first fanzines. Jophan gets across the desert with help from the Subrs.
More broadly, it represents what neofen may expect from most established fen until they prove themselves. This often leads to disillusionment.
