It was opened in 1919 as the Hotel Pennsylvania of "PEnnsylvania 6-5000" fame and renamed the Hotel Statler in 1948. In 1954, Hilton bought it and renamed it the Statler Hilton, which is how it was known when its history crossed with fandom's. Starting in the early 1980s, it went through various owners and names: The New York Statler, the New York Penta, and finally back to Hotel Pennsylvania.

Its planned closure was announced in April 2021 and demolition began in December.
