An American pro writer whose best-known novel is War for the Oaks, a pioneering work of urban fantasy who, after many years in Minneapolis, lived in Tucson, AZ before moving back to Minneapolis, where she now lives. She is a member of The Scribblies and the Pre-Joycean Fellowship. She was one of the founders of Steeldragon Press. She is married to fellow pro Will Shetterly.
She was nominated for the 1992 Best Novel Hugo.
Besides being a writer, she is a musician who sang in the band Cats Laughing, and both sang and played guitar in the folk duo The Flash Girls. She was a member of Albany Free Traders.
