Teresa Nielsen Hayden is a SF editor, fanzine writer, essayist, and teacher. She is a consulting editor for Tor Books and has also worked for Federated Media Publishing, where in 2007 she revived the comment section for the blog Boing Boing. She has also been Managing Editor at Tor.
Born Teresa Nielsen, she grew up in a Mormon household in Mesa, Arizona. She added Hayden to her name upon marrying the former Patrick Hayden in 1979 (he also took her name, becoming Patrick Nielsen Hayden.) The two of them were active members of SF fandom and collaborated on various fanzines, including the award-winning Izzard. She has also been active as a con-running fan, having worked on a variety of committees. She has been a member of the Fanoclasts, Babel-17, NESFA, The Deaf Tones, and Vanguard.
In 1985, she and her husband were Trans Atlantic Fan Fund delegates to Europe for Eastercon. Over the next few years, the Nielsen Haydens published at least three TAFF trip reports (Taffluvia and two others). From 1985 to 1989, she served on the editorial board of The Little Magazine, a poetry magazine and The New York Review of Science Fiction.
Her online activity is substantial. Their blog, Making Light, is one of the leading fannish blogs while she has been active on GEnie, rec.arts.sf.fandom, the Smofs email list, SFF.Net and others.
In 1994, a collection of her essays, Making Book, was published by NESFA Press.
She was a GoH at MidAmeriCon II, the 2016 Worldcon, where a second collection of her fan writing, Making Conversation, was released by NESFA Press.
