A [[science fiction]] author and editor based out of [[Portland, OR]].  In 2004, he won the [[Campbell Award for Best New Writer]].

Following his 2008 diagnosis of colon cancer, Lake enjoyed an outpouring of support from science fiction fandom.  Along with [[Ken Scholes]], he presided over the 2011 [[Hugo Awards]] as Master of Ceremonies at [[Renovation]].  The whole genome sequencing of his cancer was the subject of an exhibit at [[LoneStarCon 3]], where he was also honored at the Hugo Award Ceremony by [[Toastmaster]] [[Paul Cornell]].

His 2004 novelette "Into the Gardens of Sweet Night" was nominated for the [[Hugo Award]].

Lake, 49, died June 1, 2014 of cancer.
