Directory of Fandom was a fan directory published by Walter J. Daugherty in two editions or "issues" during World War II.
Issue | Date | Pp | -Notes |
---|---|---|---|
(1) | April 1942 | 22(?) | Cover (uncredited pic of book, owl and candle; verso empty) says in all-caps "Walt Daugherty's [in bigger font:] Directory of Fandom April 1942". FAPA #19 (March 1942) postmailing. Follow 18 inner, unnumbered pages of dense three-column list (name; street address; city and US state), letters A to Z separated only by a free line and no header. Tenth sheet has columns for Canada and Australia scanned as separate pages at Fanac.org, but it is made clear by the bleed of text on verso, Daugherty's brief notes and address. "Due to the shortage of time to get this directory in the mail it is impossible to complete the list of foriegn fans and to include the list of Pro-mags. Also the clubs must be left out, all of these will be included in the suppliment with the next PAPA mailing." - All sic; no such followup came. Pavlat-Evans Fanzine Index claims 24 pages, perhaps with (unscanned) back cover? |
(2) | (Summer) 1944 | 26 +2? | Cover typographic only "Walt Daugherty's DIRECTORY OF FANDOM 25¢". No explicit date; introduction "THE DAUGHERTY'S-BURG ADDRESS" opens "Once again the FAN DIRECTORY goes to press. It seems years since the last issue but actually only 14 months." This would mean June 1943, but either he badly miscalculated or there were delays; third paragraph says "free to members of the National Fantasy Fan Federation who have paid their 1944 dues and also to the members of FAPA. … members of both organizations will recieve the Directory through FAPA". This is not indexed in FAPA Book, but the Directory is mentioned in mailing comments to Mailing 28 (June) in Fantasy Amateur V8.1, Sep 1944. Fanewscard 43 (April 22, '44) said "Daugherty's 44 fan directory to press, has 410 names"`; it was reviewed, rather harshly, by Harry Warner, Jr. in Horizons 20 (V6.1, September, 29th mailing as the FA above). The final, blue sheet of DIRECTORY EXTRA says "Due to Lithographic difficulties and added lithographic cost, the cover originally planned for this issue will not appear. The following are corrections, additions and obsoletes from the list. These are compiled from the latest corrections recieved up to July 20, 1944". "This is a National Fantasy Fan Federation Publication produced by Walter J. Daugherty … Reproduced on the Duplicating Equipment of the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society at 637½ South Bixel". "You will definitely notice that I have changed the format all the way through this issue: new size, the names are individualized easier to read, and an extra line to put in a change or correction", with headings A to Z. British fans now included, all alphabetically without country separation. However, researchers should take care as, likely through unfamiliarity, there are several spelling errors in names and addresses among the British fans. Pavlat-Evans as well as 1944 Fanzine Yearbook say only 26 pages only, perhaps missing the addenda sheet. |
