Steve Collins
(1959 – )
Steve Collins is an L.A.-area fan and a member of General Technics.
Collins works as a physicist and engineer for Jet Propulsion Laboratories (JPL). During televised coverage of the Mars Curiosity Rover landing, he became renowned as "Hippie Guy," sitting next to Bobak Ferdowsi, "Mohawk Guy." As an Attitude Control Engineer, Steve was instrumental in the design of the Autonav system on NASA/JPL's Deep Space One ion-engine - driven probe and on the Deep Impact mission.
Steve is active in the theater community in the Pasadena, CA, area, including a part in a musical Star Trek parody presented by the Caltech theater arts department. He plays a homemade theremin, takes ballet classes, plays for JPL's employee soccer team, The Cosmics, and races autocross.
Collins earned degrees in physics and theater arts from the University of California Santa Cruz. He is the son of Emmy-winning cinematographer Bob Collins, known for his work on Superman and Miami Vice.
