A major publisher of SF books, Tor began as an imprint of Tom Doherty Associates, which was founded by Tom Doherty in 1980. Tor has become a force in the genre, winning more awards for its books than any other publisher. It was the "Spotlighted Publisher" at Norwescon XXVIII. Starscape Books is its children’s line. It also publishes short fiction and nonfiction in a free online magazine, Tordotcom, which debuted on July 20, 2008.

People who have worked at Tor include Tom Doherty, David Hartwell, Patrick Nielsen Hayden, Teresa Nielsen Hayden, Beth Meacham, Moshe Feder, Jim Baen, and Jim Frenkel.

Tor was sold to St. Martin's Press in 1986. St. Martin's Press is a book publisher headquartered in the Flatiron Building in New York City. It is part of Macmillan, one of the largest English-language publishing companies.
