The Science Fiction Book Club (SFBC) was a book club started by Doubleday Publishing in 1953. The Club originally offered one selection per month. This practice continued until July, 1969, when a second selection was offered.
In the late 1960s, the SFBC began publishing hardcover editions of paperback originals.
For most of its existence, it was edited by Ellen Asher who was one of the more influential (if unsung) editors in the field.
A British Science Fiction Book Club was also launched in 1953. It's unclear which one came first although an editorial by Ted Carnell in New Worlds 20 (March 1953) implies that he at least thought the British one had primacy.
