(July 1, 1942 – July 6, 2006)

Aka Dr. Gafia, richard w. brown (he affected all lowercase) was a longtime fanzine fan, active since his teens. He was an active fanzine reviewer and maintained a dictionary of fannish terms, Dr. Gafia's Fan Terms, which was one of the sources used to create Fancyclopedia 3. In the ’60s, he founded, with Arnie Katz, the Brooklyn Insurgents, a fanzine club. He was a member of The Cult, APA-F, 20th Century Fandom and one of the Cry Crowd.

In mid December, 2001, Dr. Gafia's Fan Terms was added to Fanac.org. In late July, 2005, rich arranged to edit his work online and he continued to do so until just before his death; the last update was made on May 13, 2006.

A native of California, he later lived in New York and, ultimately, near Washington, D.C. He was an early player of Coventry.
