Tom Digby
(January 6, 1940 – March 27, 2024)
A Bay Area fan and filker, Tom Digby (aka Bubbles) showed up at a LASFS meeting in the summer of 1965, wearing lederhosen and an aloha shirt and joined a few weeks later. He also had a distinctive accent which originated in north Florida, a little bit south of Jacksonville. He started wearing "normal" (almost Mundane) clothing a few months later, and over the next decade his accent gradually assimilated to something close to a Southern California speech pattern.
Digby introduced fandom to plergb.
Sometime in the 1970s, fans became aware that Tom was gay. Bill Warren later remarked that Tom had not "come out of the closet", but instead had stayed in the same place, but disassembled the closet and used the pieces for the light show in his living room.
Tom was nominated for the 1971 Best Fan Writer Hugo and the 1972 Best Fan Writer Hugo. He published the apazines Probably Something for APA-L and Minneapa, and Silicon Soapware for web and email distribution. He was a member of TAPS.
He was an Honored Guest at ConFrancisco, the 1993 Worldcon, which arranged for the publication of Tom Digby Along Fantasy Way, a collection of Tom's writings, in his honor.
